From Classic, Universal, to Google Tag Manager: How to Safely Defeat the Beast

I was drawn to Sylvia Nicosia’s talk on migrating to Google Tag Manager as our institution moved about a year ago and I wish I had more knowledge about it at the time.

Sylvia shared step by step instructions in her slides on how to set up, test, and install Tag Manager, but here are some important takeaways:

  1. Evaluate whether you should migrate to Tag Manager or not. Do you manage more than 20 custom tags? Do you manage tags from multiple sources (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Adwords, etc)? Do you want to make your life easier?
  2. Sylvia’s presentation was lunametrics.com inspired. They offer several webinars on the topic, and you should definitely check them out if you are thinking about migrating and looking for some guidance.
  3. For even more information, check out the book “Practical Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for Developers.”
